I felt the urge to bolt so strongly that my entire body vibrated with it. Hearing her last name was like a blow to the chest. This woman had been naked in bed with Tristan. For years.
She knew about ten million more things about him than I did, and no matter what happened between Tristan and myself, Sheila would always have known him longer.
To add insult to injury, she had body parts I would never be able to provide for him. Damn, this sucked so badly. I wanted to walk away. Just turn and wander back to the lodge. Either that or cut a bitch. No wonder he took the carving knife out of my hands. The fucker.
I reached out my hand to shake hers. “Hi, Sheila. It’s nice to meet you.” Lie, total lie.
Her lips tightened into a grimace as she nodded her acknowledgement of my words, but she didn’t respond in kind. It sort of reminded me of another Mrs. Alexander we all knew.
I looked over to Tristan and saw his jaw clenching. My eyes moved back to Sheila, who was trying to make significant eye contact with Tristan. He looked down at the very interesting gravel we were standing on.
The silence was deafening. “So, Sheila, what brings you to the vineyard today?” I asked like a cheerful faker.
She looked at me, almost as if she was surprised I could speak. Didn’t I know she and Tristan needed to have words in private? Why, yes, yes, I did.
“Did my mom call you?” Tristan asked her.
“No, John called me,” she answered. Her eyes glinted with something strange, like pleading.
“Ah, John. Keeping in touch then?” Tristan spat. What the fuck was that about?
“Leave it alone, Tristan. Can we go somewhere to talk, please?” she asked.
“No need. We don’t have anything to talk about Sheila. But John and my parents are probably up at the lodge if you’d like to go find them,” Tristan said as he started to walk toward the estate house. I followed along like a duckling.
As Tristan passed Sheila, she reached out and grabbed his arm to stop him. He looked down at her hand and back up at her, causing her to drop her hand faster than I would have imagined possible.
His entire body was radiating annoyance and it was starting to border on anger.
“Don’t be a jerk, Tristan. I just want to talk to you for a few minutes. Let’s go into your office,” she said in a commanding tone that explained why he found her so goddamned annoying.
“Fine. Let’s,” he said in a clipped voice. I may not have known him well, but I knew what that tone meant coming out of anyone. Trouble.
He reached the wood-and-glass doors of the building and held the door for us. Once we passed into the reception area, he turned in the opposite direction of his office and led us into a small conference room with a round table and four chairs.
Tristan pointed to a seat for me and then sat in the one next to it.
